Practical information Mauritius

Our team based in Port-Louis monitors daily changes in formalities, local prices and traffic conditions. You'll find here the practical information to prepare your trip to Mauritius: tourist visa issued free of charge upon arrival at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Plaisance for stays up to 60 days, no mandatory vaccinations except yellow fever if you're transiting through a high-risk African country, and an average budget between 90 and 180 euros per day per person in full board depending on comfort level. The Mauritian rupee (MUR) exchanges at around 48 to 50 per euro, card payments are accepted everywhere except in small shops and markets. Climate-wise, two seasons shape the year: hot and humid austral summer from November to April with cyclone risk between January and March, and dry and cool austral winter from May to October, the period we recommend for most trips. Travel is by rental car or with a driver, roads are in good condition but left-hand driving and traffic around Port-Louis require caution. The island is safe overall, tap water is drinkable in urban areas, and electrical outlets are British type requiring an adapter. For regional specifics, tipping customs or cultural codes across Indo-Mauritian, Creole, Sino-Mauritian and Franco-Mauritian communities, our team responds directly by email or phone before and during your stay.

Frequently asked questions

The answers to the most frequently asked questions from our travellers.

For French, Belgian, Swiss and Canadian travelers, no prior visa is required. You will receive a free tourist visa upon arrival at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Plaisance, valid for up to 60 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your return date. When disembarking, you will need to present a return ticket, proof of accommodation (such as a voucher from our agency) and possibly proof of sufficient funds. An arrival card completed online via the Mauritius All In One website before departure speeds up immigration clearance. For long stays or business travel, contact the Mauritius consulate in your country.

No vaccine is mandatory to enter Mauritius, except for yellow fever vaccination if you have transited for more than 12 hours in a country where the disease is present, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa or South America. We recommend being up to date on universal vaccines: diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, hepatitis A and B. Mauritius has no malaria. A few cases of dengue are recorded occasionally during the humid season, especially between January and April, so a mosquito repellent is useful in the evening. A consultation with a doctor or at an international vaccination centre 4 to 6 weeks before departure remains the best approach.

Excluding international flights, plan for an average of €90 to €180 per day per person for a comfortable trip, including accommodation, meals, transport and activities. In a guesthouse or bed & breakfast, you can go down to €60 or €70 per day. Conversely, 5-star hotels with half-board often exceed €300 per person. As a guide: a dholl puri at the market costs around 30 rupees (€0.60), a dish at a good Creole restaurant €400 to €700 rupees, a catamaran day trip with lunch €2,500 to €3,500 rupees, a compact car rental €25 to €35 per day. Tips (10% at restaurants) are appreciated but not mandatory.

Maurice can be visited year-round, but the austral winter, from May to October, offers the most pleasant conditions: temperatures between 20 and 26°C, low humidity, clear skies, and calm seas on the west coast. September and October are our preferred months, with water still warm around 24°C. The austral summer, from November to April, reaches 30°C with high humidity and a real cyclonic risk between January and March (1 or 2 cyclones affect the island on average per season). However, it is the best period for diving and dolphin watching. April and November offer a good compromise between visitor numbers and climate.

Three main options depending on your profile. Rental cars starting from 25 euros per day offer maximum freedom, with left-hand driving and a well-maintained road network, the M1 motorway connecting the north to the southwest. Private driver, a formula we often recommend, costs 80 to 120 euros per day with vehicle, relieves driving stress and provides local insights. Taxis are plentiful but negotiate the price beforehand. The public bus network serves the entire island for 30 to 60 rupees per trip, economical but slow. To reach Rodrigues, allow 1 hour 30 minutes flight time from Plaisance with Air Mauritius.

Mauritius is one of the safest destinations in the Indian Ocean. Crime remains low, and violent incidents against tourists are very rare. Take the same precautions as anywhere else: don't leave valuables visible in your car, use your hotel safe, and avoid deserted beaches at night. On the road, stay alert due to left-hand driving and a few reckless drivers, especially around Port-Louis during peak hours. At sea, respect the flags and check with your hotel about currents, particularly at Flic en Flac and Tamarin. Our team is available 7 days a week during your stay for any questions.
