History and atmosphere
The hotel bears the name of Charles Telfair, an Irish naturalist born in Belfast in 1777 and died in Port-Louis in 1833. A physician of the British colony before becoming one of the founders of Mauritius's Natural History Society, he created the island's first choir for enslaved people at Bel Ombre and actively participated in the development of the island's plantations. His name remains associated with the Pamplemousses Garden, where he was one of the leading scientific figures in the 19th century.
The resort embraces this heritage. The buildings showcase the shingled architecture typical of grand Mauritian residences, extended by open verandas overlooking the lagoon, the Rivière des Citronniers and the golf course. The interior design makes a confident nod to the colonial era: wainscoting, lambrequins, jalousies, rattan armchairs, planter chairs and daybeds evoke the age of the East India Company.
Rooms and villas
The 158 rooms and suites are distributed across 20 villas, each with 6 to 8 rooms, organized into five categories:
- Superior Rooms
- Deluxe Rooms
- Junior Suites
- Senior Suites
- Ocean Suites
All categories benefit from certified Ivor Spencer butler service. The gardens surrounding the villas blend hibiscus, frangipani and orchids, set within a landscape design that extends the residential character of the entire property.
Dining, spa and services
The resort's main restaurant is housed in the Château de Bel Ombre, an 18th-century building that has been fully restored. The Michelin-starred chef sources local, seasonal produce in a refined gastronomic approach. The château can also be explored for its French gardens and period furnishings.
Seven Colours Spa offers a menu built around wellness: anti-jetlag massages, Coco Ritual, lymphatic treatments, detox rituals, yoga and meditation. A preliminary consultation with an osteopath helps tailor protocols to individual needs. Families have access to Club Timomo, which welcomes children by age group through sports, creative and culinary activities. Baby-sitting is available.
For sports enthusiasts, the 18-hole championship course and 9-hole course designed by Peter Matkovich welcome golfers of all levels. The resort also offers tennis, pétanque, mountain-bike circuits, a water sports centre (kitesurfing, diving, dolphin swimming) and excursions by quad, go-kart or helicopter.
Location
The resort is located in Bel Ombre, a coastal resort in south Mauritius. Count around 15 minutes' drive to Le Morne, 45 minutes from Mahébourg international airport and about 50 minutes to Port-Louis. The beach runs along the estate, with a monitored swimming area set away from strong currents.
The Frédérica Nature Reserve, in the immediate vicinity, spans 1,300 hectares and can be explored by 4x4 safari-style, where you may encounter deer, hinds, monkeys and pheasants.
